Few premium cigar brands have achieved the cult-like following and legendary status of Liga Privada by Drew Estate. Known for bold flavor, meticulous craftsmanship, and limited tobacco selections, Liga Privada cigars have become a benchmark for premium cigar enthusiasts seeking rich, full-bodied smoking experiences.
Whether you’re new to the brand or a longtime fan, understanding the history and differences between the various Liga Privada blends can help you find the perfect cigar for your humidor.
What Does Liga Privada Mean?
“Liga Privada” is Spanish for “Private Blend.” The name comes from Drew Estate’s original plan for these cigars. The blend was created as a private cigar blend for staff and friends, not for public sale. Demand from countless retailers and consumers pushed Drew Estate to eventually release the cigars to the public.
From 2007, Liga Privada exploded in demand to become one of the most sought-after premium cigar lines in the industry. The brand is built around limited, premium selected tobaccos that undergo extensive fermentation and aging processes. Each Liga Privada cigar is handcrafted by the most experienced Drew Estate rollers in a dedicated production area at La Gran Fabrica (Drew Estate’s factory) in Nicaragua.
Today, the Liga Privada portfolio includes several highly sought-after blends, each offering a unique expression of the brand’s commitment to quality and complexity.
Liga Privada No. 9
The original that started the craze, Liga Privada No. 9, remains the most iconic premium cigar ever produced by Drew Estate.
The No. 9 blend was created after extensive cigar testing, with the ninth different blend ultimately picked as the winner. Covered in a dark Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro Oscuro wrapper, the cigar offers a rich, luxurious smoking experience that built Liga Privada’s global demand.
Flavor Profile
Smokers can expect:
- Espresso
- Dark chocolate
- Earth
- Leather
- Black pepper
- Natural sweetness
The No. 9 is full-bodied yet remarkably smooth. Heavy smoke production, impeccable construction, and long-lasting complexity make it a favorite among seasoned cigar enthusiasts.

Next up is the Liga Privada H99 which shines as the third major release in the Liga Privada brand.
The H99 features a hybrid wrapper that combines Connecticut Corojo and T52 Habano genetics. The result is nothing but a fantastic combination of flavor and strength.
The cigar’s blend utilizes:
- H99 Hybrid wrapper
- Mexican San Andrés binder
- Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Pennsylvania fillers
Flavor Profile
H99 smokers can expect:
- Espresso

Why Smokers Love H99
Countless cigar fans view the Liga Privada H99 as a touch softer in the strength profile, yet still very complex compared to the No. 9 and T52. It delivers spice and richness, but with a balance that can be a touch more approachable to smokers looking for something in Liga Privada series.
Liga Privada Único Serie
The Liga Privada Único Serie is an extension of the Liga Privada lines and focuses on limited shapes and blends outside the core launches of Liga Privada. One of the most popular offerings in the Unico Serie is the Papas Fritas.
Instead of abandoning these concept cigars, Drew Estate launched the Único Serie in small quantities to allow avid cigar fans a way to enjoy unique cigars in the Liga Privada portfolio.
The Único Serie often attracts collectors and enthusiasts looking for limited-production cigars with distinctive flavor profiles and unusual shapes.
Flavor Experience
While flavor varies by release, most Único Serie cigars maintain the rich character Liga Privada is known for, offering notes of:
- Cocoa
- Espresso
- Pepper
- Earth
- Leather
- Sweet tobacco
These cigars showcase some of the most creative blending work from Drew Estate’s master blenders.
Liga Privada Papas Fritas
As noted before, one Liga Privada size is worth another mentioning and that is the Papas Fritas.
Launched as an affordable way for cigar smokers to smoke a Liga Privada, Papas Fritas has built a loyal following of its own. The name means “French Fries” in Spanish, a Drew Estate nod to the smaller size and use of premium tobaccos cuttings from each Liga Privada blend.
Size and Construction
Papas Fritas is generally crafted in a perfect 4¼ x 44 shape, making it a shorter smoking option while still delivering tons of flavor.
Flavor Profile
Despite its smaller size, smokers still enjoy classic Liga Privada characteristics:
- Earth
- Cocoa
- Pepper
- Coffee
- Natural sweetness
Many cigar enthusiasts keep Papas Fritas on hand as an everyday smoke because it offers exceptional value while maintaining the quality standards associated with the Liga Privada name.
Why It Is So Popular
Papas Fritas provides:
- Shorter smoking time

For smokers seeking premium flavor without committing to a larger cigar, Papas Fritas remains one of the best options in the Drew Estate portfolio.
