Tampa, better known as “cigar city,” was a city built by the gnarled hands of Cuban cigarmakers. The money generated by the immensely successful “Havana Clear” cigar industry catapulted the sleepy fishing village of Fort Brooke into the powerhouse of the Gulf Coast. Cuban cigarmakers came from New York, Key West, and Havana by the thousands to participate in Tampa’s cigar industry at one of over a hundred cigar factories. This industry employed the finest aged tobaccos from Cuba, Sumatra, Connecticut, and other regions of the world known for luxury botanicals. During the golden age of Tampa’s cigar industry, the finest cigar brands in the world, such as Cuesta-Rey or Arturo Fuente, were handmade by Cuban cigarmakers at one of cigar city’s many factories. Unfortunately, the Cuban Embargo caused the collapse of many of Tampa’s cigar companies. Today, only J.C. Newman Cigar Co. remains as a vestige of a once-mighty industry. J.C. Newman honors the tradition of Tampa cigarmaking with an iconic and quintessentially Tampa cigar called the Tampa Trolley. Tampa Trolleys are 7×52 Churchill cigars sold in a bundle of twenty. These cigars are made from aged Dominican Cuban-seed filler tobaccos. These are the same tobaccos used in Dominican handmade brands, such as La Unica or Cheateau Fuente. The Tampa Trolley is then wrapped in a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro. These cigars offer a rich, earthy aroma to the cigar smoker. Additionally, these cigars bring about a certain nostalgia for cigar smokers from Florida. During Tampa’s golden age of cigars, Streetcars or trolleys were a common sight and means of transportation for Cuban cigarmakers. Now, however, Tampa Trolleys are a sobering reminder of what once was and what can only be yet again with sufficient puffs of smoke.
