Seconds or throwout cigars are a time-honored tradition in Cigar City. Tampa, known for its hundreds of cigar factories and billions of cigars, has long produced the world’s finest stogies. Weary travelers, on their sojourns to Key West or Orlando, frequently stopped by Tampa’s cigar factories to pick up imperfect cigars at a discounted price. Normally, a Tampa palma was priced at a quarter. If it had damage to its wrapper or an imperfect shape, however, it was priced at a nickel or a dime. This made factory throwouts, rejects, or smokers—as they were called—an immensely popular form of cigar and a profitable stream of revenue for cigar manufacturers. Factory Throwouts are premium value bundles of twenty cigars. They come in three sizes: forty-nine (robusto), fifty-nine (lonsdale), six-hundred and eleven (Tampa palma), and ninety-nine (churchill). When asked by company salesmen why the throwout brands were so important compared to handmade brands, Stanford replied, “there are only two cigars in the world: the ones that sell and the ones that do not.” Besides the value, the cigar is no slouch with its blend. The second-grade tobaccos selected for the Ecuadorian wrapper on J.C. Newman’s Nicaraguan long-filler cigars is used expressly for the factory throwouts, covering the aged Dominican fillers inside the cigar.
