Seconds or throwout cigars are a time-honored tradition in Cigar City. Tampa, known for its hundreds of cigar factories and billions of cigars, has long produced the world’s finest stogies. Weary travelers, on their sojourns to Key West or Orlando, frequently stopped by Tampa’s cigar factories to pick up imperfect cigars at a discounted price. Normally, a Tampa palma was priced at a quarter. If it had damage to its wrapper or an imperfect shape, however, it was priced at a nickel or a dime. This made factory throwouts, rejects, or smokers—as they were called—an immensely popular form of cigar and a profitable stream of revenue for cigar manufacturers.
