Oliva Cigars, not to be confused with the Tampa-based Oliva Tobacco Company or the Oliveros cigar brand, is one of the finest Nicaraguan handmade cigar companies in the world. Manufacturing millions of cigars a year from the impressive Tabacalera Oliva de Nicaragua S.A. The success of the new generation of Oliva cigars and their swanky marketing belies a legacy as old as Key West or Tampa. Started as a tobacco growing company and cigar manufacturer by Melanio Oliva in 1886, the family sustained its operation as some of Cuba’s finest growers until Cuba began its tumultuous affair with Fidel Castro in 1959. After the Cuban Embargo began three years afterwards, the family moved to Spain and worked in tobacco brokerage, finance, and accounting. The family never abandoned its love of tobacco, however, and reestablished itself with a farm in Nicaragua in 1969. The family returned to its former glory completely with the launching of its familial cigar brand in 1995. Shortened to “Oliva,” the family profited greatly from the cigar boom and is now a household name for cigar smokers around the world. The Oliva Melanio, Series V, Series G, and Connecticut Reserve are consistently ranked some of the finest cigars in the world by the leading tobacco media authorities. The brands are made from finely aged Nicaraguan tobaccos from the growing regions of Esteli, Jalapa, Condega, Somoto, Pueblo Nuevo, and Ometepe. Almost all of their cigars, apart from a few made in their Honduran annex facility, are long-filler with select Ecuadorian Cuban-seed wrappers.

Oliva Cigars began as a family tobacco growing and cigar making operation in Cuba in 1886. In the 1920’s, the company’s founder committed the family to tobacco growing and brokerage. This lasted through the Cuban Revolution and the family worked as international brokers in Spain during the 1960’s. After purchasing Nicaraguan parcels of land in 1969, the family returned to its roots with tobacco growing and, later, cigar manufacturing. In 1995, the company shortened its name to Oliva and began a journey to be a powerhouse of American cigar markets. In 2003, the company opened a new factory in Nicaragua which now makes about 10 million cigars a year.
