What is Montecristo?

Montecristo cigars are some of the best known of the Cuban expat cigar brands. After Fidel Castro’s nationalization of many cigar brands in 1960, cigar manufacturers carried seed and band in their pockets to new locales in the Canary Islands or Jamaica. Montecristo is now made by Altadis USA in the much-lauded Tabacalera de Garcia in the Dominican Republic. They are Dominican handmade cigars with finely aged filler tobaccos.

History of Montecristo

Montecristo began with Alonso Menendez as a humble brand in 1935. Named after the favorite novel of the factory’s cigarmakers, The Count of Monte Cristo, the brand grew steadily in popularity and success until it was nationalized by Fidel Castro in 1960. Alonso Menendez and his business partners fled to the Canary Islands and later the Dominican Republic, releasing an expat brand of Montecristo cigars to the American public in the 1970’s. Today, both brands are household names for American cigar smokers.

Montecristo Classic

Montecristo Classic is a series of Dominican handmade cigars with finely aged Connecticut wrapper and Dominican filler tobaccos. These cigars are smooth to medium-bodied. These cigars come in boxes of twenty, packs of five, or cigarillo cases of one hundred.

Montecristo White Series

Montecristo White Series is a series of Dominican handmade cigars with finely aged Ecuadorian wrapper and Dominican filler tobaccos. These cigars are smooth to medium-bodied. These cigars come in boxes of fifteen, boxes of twenty-seven, packs of five, and cigarillo cases of one hundred.

Montecristo Platinum Series

Montecristo Platinum Series is a series of Dominican handmade cigars with finely aged Mexican wrapper and Dominican filler tobaccos. These cigars are medium to full-bodied. These cigars come in boxes of fifteen.
